Argentina is where the South American continent tapers to a tip, pointing towards Antarctica.
Argentina is a geographical jewel. Its name is derived from the Latin root for silver (Spanish settlers’ had misguided hopes of finding precious metals). Its capital,
Buenos Aires, is famous for the tango, effortless chic and beauty.
To the west is the ‘gaucho’ homeland of the flat green pampas stretching beyond the horizon. To the north, the legendary
Iguazú Falls are half the height again of the
Niagara Falls and nearly four times as wide. Along the western border with
Chile, higher than Mt Mckinley in
Alaska, the Andean summit of
Aconcagua is the official “Roof of the
Americas.”
Then there are the wine regions of
Mendoza, the ruins-rich canyon of the Quebrada de Humahuaca in the northwest another World Heritage Site as well as the Falls. In the southern region of
Patagonia, there’s the wildlife-packed Atlantic coastline of the Vald
és Península, the aboriginal rock art of Cueva de las Manos (
Cave of
Hands) and the extraordinary Peri
to Moreno glacier, a creaking river of ice that’s a feast for the eyes and the ears, the only glacier in the world which is advancing, not retreating.
