Tailor-made holidays in Argentina with Imagine Latin America

What to see and do in the Northwest

  • The Archaeological Museum which has many fine relics of Inca civilization. Archaeologists here discovered the exceptionally well-preserved bodies of three children who had been killed as part of a ritual sacrifice to Incan deities. Lying next to them, an astonishing collection of over 100 gold and silver statues, ornaments, ceremonial garments and ceramics were found. All are on display at the Museum.
  •
  • Explore La Quebrada (canyon) de Humahuaca in the north (declared a Unesco World Heritage site) which is dotted with quaint oasis villages with dramatic settings. Purmamarca is a great place for hiking.
  •
  • Take the three hour drive in the canyon across mountains to the idyllic hamlet of Iruya.
  •
  • Explore the charming cities Salta and further north Jujuy.
  •
  • Visit Cafayate, the wine capital of the north-west. This is one of the driest spots in the country with lots of sunny days.
  •
  • Drink some of the great wine to be found in this region. Salta’s high altitude vino is winning acclaim from all over the world.
