Ibera Wetlands

Breathtaking waterfalls, lush wetlands, rare jungle animals and the haunting remains of Jesuit Mission culture. Argentina’s Iberá region is fast emerging as the new must-see adventure spot in Latin America. Some say it is a bit like Africa without the elephants! While that may be disputed, the Ibera wetlands can certainly be likened to Brazil’s Pantanal. The birdlife here is prolific, a twitcher’s paradise and it is also great for wildlife photography.

The Ibera wetlands are an enormous and spectacular subtropical ecosystem. The big expanse and subtropical climate has rainfall of 60 – 80 inches per annum. This together with other ecological factors has helped to create an extremely abundant plant biomass that grows alongside swamps, marshes and lakes, all interconnected by a network of channels and streams. To spend several hours on a boat with an experienced guide spotting the amazing birdlife and animals like the capybara is something not to be missed.

The Ibera Wetlands region can be visited all year round, but between December to February it will be very hot and so try and visit at other times of the year or else be prepared to take long siestas in the afternoon if you do!

The name of the province, ‘Misiones’, comes from the missionary colonies that grew to size and power in this area before they were exiled from the country. The province contains the mighty Iguazu Falls and also Jesuit ruins throughout the province, most notably the largest at San Ignacio Mini.

Estancia Santa Ines, en route to the Iguazu Falls, 12 km from Posadas, right on the border of Corrientes and Misiones - this is a beautiful place to stay. Built in 1906 in English tudor-style the Estancia Santa Ines has pretty gardens and it feels as though you have stepped back in time. The large rooms all with private bathroom. More…

Don Enrique Lodge
are cabins set deep in the forest and to explore this fairly untouched part of Argentina, away from the crowds at Iguazu, is very satisfying. The lodge is located 280 km from Posadas and 290 km from Iguazu Falls. The area is known as the Region of the Waterfalls and Cascades and this is where the magnificent Waterfalls of Moconá (Saltos de Moconá) are also to be found. More…
