Weather in Southern Patagonia
The weather down here...
The climate in Southern Patagonia is primarily dry due to the wind coming from the west. The average rainfall is 300mm per year, occurring in the winter time (June to October). In summer, the weather is dry, sunny, cool and windy; the average temperature is of 20ºC, but it can reach a maximum of 30ºC and a minimum of 10ºC; winds are moderate to strong, sometimes reaching gusts of 120 kilometres per hour. In summer dawn is at 5.30 am and it does not go dark until 11 pm. In winter, days are shorter with only 8 hours of light.
Weather on or near the glaciers is completely unpredictable, since the winds coming over the Andes are constantly changing, bringing humidity which then precipitates as snow. While November to April sees the best weather, you might still be unlucky enough to get a day of rain on the glacier itself. However, downpours are rare and there is usually enough sun to get great photographs of the ice. Avoid the crowds of the peak summer holidays in January and early February, but come in March and April instead.
The whole region is closed for winter in June, July and August. Spring is pretty chilly too and you should bring warm clothes at any time of year.
