The Pampas and Estancias

The Pampas is a vast expanse of grasslands some 600km (360 miles) south of Buenos Aires.

To stay on an estancia in the Argentine countryside is one of the best ways to relax and gives you an excellent chance to understand a different way of life. Come here and ride with ‘gauchos’ (Argentine cowboys) or try polo which is available at some estancias. Most of the estancias are no more than a couple of hours drive away from the capital and provide a great contrast to a couple of days in the city or if you are short of time and want to see another side of Argentina.

Beneath the seemingly endless horizons, the grassy plains of the pampas were the original gaucho country, now occupied by sprawling cattle ranches or often elegant country houses, most having their heyday in 1880 to 1930, which today open their doors to paying guests.

The pampas are also the most productive areas in terms of agriculture and industry. The region is known as the economic heart of Argentina as it produces much of the beef for which Argentina is famous.

In the south, low mountain ranges diversify the landscape before giving way to an inviting Atlantic coastline that’s the prime holiday destination for Argentines themselves.

El Ombu de Areco is an historical estancia just under two hours drive from downtown Buenos Aires. It is located in San Antonio de Areco, birthplace of the gaucho tradition. The late-colonial style mansion, built in 1880 by Lieutenant-General Pablo Riccheri, offers visitors a magnificent setting for an unforgettable stay. More…
