The Pampas and Estancias, Luxury Argentina Holidays

The Pampas Argentina
The Pampas Argentina
The Pampas Argentina
The Pampas is a vast expanse of grasslands some 600km (360 miles) south of Buenos Aires. To stay on an estancia in the Argentine countryside is one of the best ways to relax and gives you an excellent chance to understand a different way of life. Come here and ride with ‘gauchos’ (Argentine cowboys) or try polo which is available at some estancias. Most of the estancias are no more than a couple of hours drive away from the capital and provide a great contrast to a couple of days in the city or if you are short of time and want to see another side of Argentina.

Beneath the seemingly endless horizons, the grassy plains of the pampas were the original gaucho country, now occupied by sprawling cattle ranches or often elegant country houses, most having their heyday in 1880 to 1930, which today open their doors to paying guests.

The pampas are also the most productive areas in terms of agriculture and industry. The region is known as the economic heart of Argentina as it produces much of the beef for which Argentina is famous.

In the south, low mountain ranges diversify the landscape before giving way to an inviting Atlantic coastline that’s the prime holiday destination for Argentines themselves.

Five resons to visit an estancia:

1 - Gauchos: Gauchos are symbols of Argentine culture. Staying on an estancia you will experience the true essence of Argentine life.

2 - Horses:
Take horse rides through the natural beauty of the Pampas.

3 - Polo:
Polo, or “the game of kings”, is practised on many estancias close to Buenos Aires. Watch a game, or ask us to organise a lesson for you.

4 - Mate:
You will get to try Yerba Mate (pronounced ma-tay), the national drink which consists of 'Yerba' that almost fills a mate (a metal or wooden drinking vessel) and has hot water added, and then drunk through a metal straw. It is usually passed around and shared.

5 - Asado:
Enjoy an asado, an Argentine BBQ. Cooking asado is a national pastime whereby meat is grilled 'the gaucho way' in an open fire.
