Tips on Travelling in Bolivia

  1.
  2.
  3. Learn some basic Spanish. In Bolivia, more than in other Latin American countries, English is not widely spoken outside of the big cities.  Click here to Spanish - learning the Basics in Argentina.
  4.
  5. There’s no need to pack lots of stuff as most things can be bought in the markets; for example a fleece is a fraction of the price of one bought back home.
  6.
  7. To enter museums you will often have to show your passport, but a photocopy is usually good enough, so take a couple of copies and show these, while leaving the real thing in the hotel.
  8.
  9. Give yourself a break. This is after all the highest city in the world and it will leave you breathless. Eat little and often and drink plenty of bottled water. Go to www.medex.org.uk for tips on dealing with altitude etc.
  10.
  11. In Bolivia, especially in La Paz, it is commonplace for there to be road blockades. There are only four main roads into and out of La Paz and demonstrations/blockades occur with relative frequency. Extra time should be built into your itinerary to allow for these kind of disruptions.
