It was formed in 1995 in order to protect almost 2 million hectares of pristine land. Possibly due to the very low numbers of mahogany found here it has escaped the destruction by loggers, a fate from which many other rich tropical forests have suffered.

In terms of wildlife, notable inhabitants on this park include condor, eagle, giant anteaters and many monkey species. Also often seen are capybara, caiman, not to mention parrots!
The Chalalan Lodge in the heart of the Bolivian Amazon is a five hour canoe trip up river from Rurrenebaque, (depending on river conditions).
