Sucre

Located at 8,500 ft (2,550 m), Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia and its most beautiful colonial city. Sucre is considered a World Heritage Site by U.N.E.S.C.O and no visit to Bolivia is complete without visiting it. Known as the White City because all the facades of the houses are painted white, this beautiful city is without doubt a colonial gem. The city contains some of the most striking and well preserved architecture in Latin America. Some of the town’s best hotels are in converted colonial mansions.

Visit Sucre as part of our Bolivia, Iguazu Falls and Rio itinerary. 19 days, from £2,596 pp excluding international flights. Find out more...

Sucre is also a large university town which gives it a certain buzz. There are some great museums to see while here, including a really interesting textiles museum. This is a town in which to wander through the narrow streets, pop in and see all the ornate churches which are peppered throughout the town. If you do go to the textiles museum then it would also be interesting for you to visit the small weaving villages of Potolo and Tarabuco.

Sucre has a lower altitude, enjoys a more pleasant climate (though still be sure to give a visit in the wet season from November to March a miss) and can be explored by foot in the main. It is number one on the map for those in search of religious and colonial architecture.

Also, rather excitingly, recently dinosaur tracks have been uncovered.

Hotel de su Merced is one of the most charming hotels in Bolivia. It is central and set in a lovely colonial building which dates from the 18th century. From its roof terrace you will discover fine views over Sucre. More…
