The mountainous area of Minas Gerais was formed mainly by colonists who searched for veins of gold (gold was discovered in1693) and gems and later diamonds. The name literally means ‘general mines’. Here you will see some of the best examples of Baroque architecture in Brazil; eat some of the best food in Brazil and see interesting towns including Congonhas home to Brazil’s most famous piece of art, The Twelve Apostles, by the sculptor Aleijadinho.

Ouro Preto (black gold) is a permanent reminder of the importance of gold and precious stones in
Brazil's history and development. From the 18th century, the mines around Ouro Preto overflowed with gold and gems. The town was capital of Minas Gerais from 1823 to 1897 under its former name of Vila Rica (
Wealthy
Village).
Fortunately, Ouro Preto has preserved its 18th century architecture and appearance well. The town is considered a national landmark and declared a world monument by UNESCO in 1980. Its narrow, cobblestone streets are a legacy of
Brazil's colonial past. The town also has more than 23 churches built in the baroque style that dominated the period. Some are magnificently adorned with gold, which was more than abundance.
Solar da Ponte is a beautiful 18-roomed country mansion set within peaceful shady gardens in the historical 18th-century mountain
village of
Tiradentes, with its winding streets and Baroque churches. The Colonial-style architecture creates a comfortable environment and the spacious interiors feature light colour schemes complemented by traditional décor and locally made furniture. It is run by an Englishman and his Brazilian wife.
