The Amazon

Sunrise in the Amazon.
Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas State and has a population of about 2 million. It is right in the middle of the humid jungle and is the main point of entry for those travelling in the jungle.

The Amazon is a region of superlatives: it spans the borders of eight countries; it is the world's largest river basin and the source of one-fifth of the Earth's river water. It has the world's highest diversity of birds and freshwater fish; is the planet's largest and most luxuriant rainforest in which lives more than one third of all species in the world.

We recommend eco lodges and use local facilities that are ecologically sensitive, that also boost the local economy, creating demand for accommodations, food, and local guides while minimising the impact on the local ecosystem:

Amazon Village is 30 kilometres from Manaus on the banks of the Puraquequara River or a three hour motorised canoe ride. With 32 wooden bungalows built in amongst the trees – each has twin bedrooms and a private bathroom. Knowledgeable guides will show you the environment. More…

Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge
is considered by many to be one of the best lodges in the Amazon. It lies in a vast and relatively untouched area of rainforest adjacent to the Anavilhanas Archipelago on Rio Negro. The 20 simple, yet comfy cottages, built on suspended wooden structures are adorned with regional arts and crafts. More…

Cristalino Jungle Lodge
is located in the south of the Amazon on the Cristalino River. This wonderfully remote lodge hides in a private rainforest reserve on a bend of the Cristalino river - a distant tributary of the distant Amazon... The lodge’s conservation and community work is being used as a model for ecotourism development in the region and each and every US$25 per visitor is donated to the Cristalino Ecological Foundation. To be seen in the area are 570 species of bird and more than 1,800 species of butterfly; a tapir clay lick. More…

If you are looking for an 'expedition cruise' for a full week, where you journey deeper and deeper into the jungle, then this 7 night cruise - Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon, with Amazon Nature Tours - is for you. Similar but different to a Galapagos cruise, on this Amazon adventure you will explore far into the forest. More...

Clipper Cruises are a fun way to explore the Amazon and pack a lot into your itinerary, especially if you don’t want to be based in a forest lodge. These river boats take between 8 and 20 people, the beds are bunk beds with private showers. 2, 3 & 5 night cruises are possible.  More…
