The Pantanal

Piuva Trees, the symbol of the Pantanal
Imagine a flat area extending over 75,000 square kilometres, the size of Holland, Switzerland and Belgium put together. Now imagine this vast plain inhabited almost exclusively by birds, animals and fish and preserved almost instinctively by a small population which lives in perfect harmony with all of it. The Pantanal is this incredible combination of beauty, with an enormous variety of flora and fauna bursting into life before you. You might be lucky enough to see the landing and take off of the Tuiulu, a bird with a wing span of over three metres…

The Pantanal is the world’s largest area of wetlands, a flat landscape, with gently sloping and meandering rivers. The region, whose name derives from the Portuguese word “pântano” (meaning “swamp” or “marsh” ), is mostly within the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. There are also small portions in Bolivia and Paraguay. About 99% of the land in the Pantanal is privately owned for the purpose of agriculture and ranching in particular. There are some 2500 fazendas in the region, with up to 8 million head of cattle.

Local heroes: a protest that made a difference. If the Hidrovia Paraguay-Parana navigation project had gone ahead, 3,400 km of river would have been turned into a shipping channel. More…

The Pantanal floods during the rainy season (December to May), submerging over 80% of the area (water levels can rise more than three metres) and supporting the world's richest collection of aquatic plants. It is thought to be the world’s most dense flora and fauna ecosystem. It is often overshadowed by the Amazon Rainforest, but is as vital and as interesting a part of the country to visit. Birds are all around, but the Pantanal is also a sanctuary for giant river otters, anacondas, iguanas, jaguars, cougars, crocodiles, deer and anteaters. More…
