After a lengthy restoration by two former London bankers, the austere wood panelling and heavy beams in the salons and stairway are now brightened by fresh flowers, wingback chairs and crystal chandeliers.

Many of the spacious bedrooms have a balcony, private patio or original parquet flooring; all are sound-proofed and slickly furnished with Tom Dixon lamps, leather chairs from Chile's Santiago Valdés and mosaic-tiling.

Outside, water cascades from stone arches in the fern-filled, cobbled courtyard, where award-winning Valparaiso caterers Pasta e Vino serve well-prepared Italian dishes, Ionic columns edge a heated outdoor pool and two turreted towers (one equipped for massages, the second housing a DJ booth for occasional parties) overlook a verdant garden that sprawls up the lower slopes of 860-metre Cerro San Cristóbal.

Amiable staff will iron a couple of items of clothing for free on arrival, loan mobile phones and subway cards to guests, and even escort them to a cash machine, if need be.

Bikes are also available to scoot around Bellavista or explore next-door Parque Metropolitano.
