Isla Gorgona

Isla Gorgona is in the Gorgona National Park and is of simple construction. In fact the facilities all over the island are of a wonderfully simple nature. There are 18 bedrooms with private bathrooms, all decorated with local objects.

Isla Gorgona was once a penal colony, situated about 50 km off the Pacific coast of southern Colombia. The island is now a national park, created in 1985 and nature preserve where strict attention is paid to preserving the richly varied wildlife of the sub-tropical forest and the coral reefs offshore. Prior to the Spaniards' arrival, the island was inhabited by Indian tribes who left petroglyphs, artifacts, stone statues and a ceremonial site called El Templete.

A portion of the prison buildings have been converted for research, lodgings and a restaurant, the only one on the island. All in all a fairly unique experience!

The only way of getting here is by boat. Diving is the main reason people visit this island. The dive sites are amazing and it is likely you see seaturtles, moreens and whitefin sharks. If you are really lucky you might see a whale or a whaleshark at certain times of the year.
