Central Highlands (Arenal, Monteverde)

Arenal Volcano - dramatic lava flow at night
This inland area (Alajuela) is marked by natural beauty and a series of spectacular volcanoes that make up the Cordillera Central mountain range. Volcan Arenal is Alajuela’s main attraction and arguably the most spectacular volcano in Costa Rica to visit.

Just eleven miles outside of San Jose Alajuela sits on a gentle slope and is slightly warmer than neighbouring San Jose attracting city dwellers in the summer months. Alajuela’s town centre is much like the hectic street markets in San Jose, if a bit smaller and laid back; several nearby villages are even more slower-paced and are popular among visitors.

Volcan Arenal is the most stunning view, but is a bit out of the way (thankfully!) and takes several days to visit. The impressive volcano erupts regularly and on clear nights you can see the orange lava flow down the mountain. Arenal is next to Laguna de Arenal, Costa Rica’s largest inland body of water, which covers 48 square miles. The lake’s natural depression is about two million years old, but was expanded by engineers in 1973.

Poas Volcano
Volcan Poás or Poas Volcano is slightly less famous than Arenal, but is an easy day trip and (when visible) is also is very beautiful and well worth visiting. Local residents were evacuated in 1989 and 1994, but today the volcano has more bark than bite. It continues to burble and belch, and one can climb to the top and stare down at its innards. The summit also boasts views of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

This whole area is also perfect for rafting, riding, mountain-biking, walking on the ‘Hanging Bridges of Arenal’, boating on Lake Arenal etc... The mountains also offer exciting zip-line canopy tours in Costa Rica. This growing activity in Costa Rica is an adrenaline-filled way to fly through the sky above the rainforest. Imagine zipping along above the treetops at almost 40 miles per hour….
