Nicoya Peninsula

Ok - a cloudy day, but still a beautiful beach...
Within the vast expanse of this rugged and stunning coastline are magnificent beaches, some of the best in Costa Rica, with dramatic coastal scenery and small villages each with its own distinct charm.

Not to mention those striking Pacific sunsets….. Water sports such as surfing, fishing, snorkelling and diving define much of the character of the villages. Most areas were discovered by surfers in the first instance as the pacific side of Costa Rica presents one of the best stretches of surfing coastline in the world (breaks like Playa Negra, Witches Rock and Playa Tamarindo offer anyone from the beginner to the expert the opportunity to catch a few waves in warm tropical water). Now, the word is out and we urge you to go there and see for yourself…

Various eco-systems provide habitat for numerous plant species and animals. As with all of Costa Rica, the Nicoya Peninsula is blessed with some spectacular natural assets ranging from turtle beaches, to subterranean caves, birding hotspots and maritime riches which are protected in several nature and wildlife reserves.

The Nicoya Peninsula has two very different seasons: the dry season begins at the end of November and until May the sun drenches the land. Many trees lose their leaves and cars driving on the bumpy dirt roads stir up clouds of dust, covering the roadside foliage with a dull, brown layer. The first rainfalls to relieve the dry season occur in May, initiating the "little summer" with intermittent rain showers. Rainfalls increase during the following months to become very heavy in September to November, when the peninsula turns into a dripping lush rainforest. Temperatures during the rainy season, called winter here, may sometimes drop to 22ºC, while in dry season temperatures can reach 36ºC.

Because of poor or non-existent roads, this tropical paradise has long been off the beaten track for travellers in Costa Rica, but roads and transportations have improved in recent years. Despite the development in tourism, the atmosphere here still feels unhurried and laid-back.

Lodging options on the southern peninsula range from low key hostels with outdoor showers to some of the most elegant small hotels in Costa Rica while package tourism and big chain hotels aren't yet common to the area. Come now!
