Set in a beautiful countryside, the city of Otavalo has around 26,000 inhabitants and is famous for its crafts, weavers and especially for its colourful Saturday market. This is the main market day, but there is a market daily. The Otavaleños are a strikingly proud race of people. These highland Indians also speak Quichua as their primary tongue and of course Spanish as their secondary language. You can either visit this area as a long day trip from Quito or recommend staying in one of the beautiful haciendas in the area.
