Quito, at an altitude of 2,850m is also one of the best places to see the colonial and ecclesiastical treasures left behind by the Spanish.

Founded on the site of an Inca settlement, Quito was the first city to be named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. Flanked by the Andes mountain range and sandwiched by the western slopes of the Pichincha volcano (at a height of 4,790 m) with canyons on the eastern side, the city sits inside a long narrow valley forming a setting unparalleled by most cities in South America. Quito is also the highest capital city in Latin America after La Paz in Bolivia and combined with its rich architecture of bygone colonial days, the scenery and overall effect is quite breathtaking. On clear days you may also view other snow-capped volcanoes such as Cotopaxi in the far distance.
