Kapawi Lodge continued

Being so remote there is a great variety of wildlife in the surrounding rainforest, and you are given an insight into the flora and fauna of the rainforest and the life of the Achuar by a naturalist guide and an Achuar guide from the local community. The area is home to about 540 species of birds and 200 mammal species. During your stay it is possible to see pink dolphins, giant otters, caiman, tapirs, capybaras, various species of monkeys including squirrel and howler monkeys, and much more.

Kapawi Lodge does not offer fixed excursions, but multiple choices and flexibility. There are visits to Achuar communities, river canoeing, bird-watching and rainforest hikes. The rainforest hikes range from short easy walks of up to 3 hours on well-defined trails, to demanding treks of many hours. There are always two guides per 8 guests.

Kapawi Lodge is built on land owned by the Achuar Organisation. Since 2008 the lodge (currently jointly owned by the Achuar and a private enterprise) is now being run by the Ashuar will become wholly owned by them in 2011. Profits from this project enable the Achuar to remain in their homelands.

“KAPAWI has practiced cultural and environmental sensivity that sets standards so high that all other eco-tourist lodges will have to reconsider their goals.”
