The Mayan Riviera

Mayan riviera beaches
The Mayan Riviera stretches from the southern of the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula (from approx. 10 miles south of Cancun the seaside village of Puerto Morelos) in Mexico. It stretches along 75 miles of the Mexican Caribbean coastline in the south-eastern part of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The weather is completely ideal, beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters make for a perfect vacation destination. The term Riviera Maya is fairly new and has varied definitions, but it includes places like Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum. It ends at the town of Carrillo Puerto.

Most people staying along this coastline will be in a resort, but the further away from Cancun you head and the less touristy it becomes and we know of some lovely, small out of the way places to stay. See below…

Maroma Resort & Spa is a lovely Orient Express property set on a long and idyllic beach and 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. Imagine eating breakfast as you gaze out across the ocean..  This property finds the balance between being quite formal and yet also relaxed. The original house (part of the coconut plantation) has been kept and additional rooms have been added around the large and manicured grounds. More…

Cabanas de Ana y Jose, named after its creators is a charming Mexican-Caribbean experience in a spectacular location, just south of Cancun, on the fringes of a breathtaking white sandy beach. This casual retreat is known for its sumptuous seafood, as well as its breezy and spacious accommodation. Some of the world’s most famous Mayan ruins are just a short drive away. More…

Shambala Petit Hotel is possibly paradise rediscovered with miles of soft, powdery - white beach contrasting with cobalt seas. There are ten cool cabanas, each distinct from the others, sitting in a horse shoe shape facing the ocean, between coconut palms. More…

The Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya opened right at the end of 2007 and is set in 36 acres of jungle, mangrove swamps and crystal clear water from natural lagoons, fronting the white sand beaches of the Maya Riviera. The resort’s centre-piece is rather uniquely a deep freshwater reservoir sacred to the ancient Maya. More…
