Morelia

Morelia is one of the oldest universities in the Americas and one of the most important public universities of Mexico. Situated a couple of hundred miles west of Mexico City. Today it is a fun and lively place to visit.

Founded in 1541 it was initially called Valladolid after the Spanish city of the same name and families of Spanish nobility were encouraged to move here. So Valladolid was essentially Spanish, inhabited by conquistadors and their descendants, and by upstarts that came from the metropolis. In 1547 it got the title of city, and was given a coat of arms in 1553.

Villa Montana, just ten minutes down the road from Morelia and set up on the slopes of Cerro de Santa Maria, is an indulgent retreat with exquisite gardened terraces and great views which set it apart, with beautiful blooms, towering fir trees and ivy coloured stone walls.
