As well as the foremost city of the Inca Empire, Cusco is also the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city. Situated at 3,338m the altitude of Cusco will take your breath away if nothing else and it is an essential stop on any holiday itinerary. The flight from Lima is a wonderful journey of about 1 hour which takes you from the Pacific Ocean, over the Andes and into the high Andes where Cusco nestles.

Cusco serves as a great base for explorations into the Sacred Valley, to Machu Picchu or as a start/end point for adventures into the Amazon rainforest.

Peru itinerary suggestion

Four roads once led from Cusco's main square to the four corners of the Inca Empire.  The original empire included all of Peru and Bolivia, extending from what is today Ecuador and part of Colombia, to northern Chile and Argentina. The Inca Empire was almost as vast as the Roman Empire and connected by an impressive road network stretching over 23,000 kilometres (14,300 miles).
