The main routes take you through some unforgettable scenery and to places which are almost inaccessible by other means.
Orient Express own the whole Peru Rail network and run all the trains from Cusco to
Machu Picchu and then from Cusco to Puno, by
Lake Titicaca. There are four classes of train: the train for locals; the backpacker train, the vistadome and the Hiram Bingham – the luxury train service.
The
Hiram Bingham train service is named after the American explorer who discovered
Machu Picchu in 1911. The train leaves from Cusco at about 9 am, but to avoid the series of ‘switchbacks’ which are necessary on the line, we find that guests often prefer to join the train at the small village of Poroy. Whichever you prefer.
The journey through the Sacred Valley and following the course of the Urubamba river valley takes about 3 hours with a half hour bus ride to Machu Picchu, from where you will enjoy a guided tour and then free time to explore the citadel on your own.
You will arrive as most people are heading out to find lunch, but you will have enjoyed a delicious brunch on your way up.
Afternoon tea is served at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary lodge, before dinner is served on the train back to
Cusco. The train departs at about 6 pm and you will be back in your hotel by 10pm. A great and unique day.
