Huaraz

Huaraz is not always included on a first visit to Peru and yet if decent mountains and hiking are your thing, then the area around Huaraz is definitely worth spending some time in, Huaraz itself is a colourful market town and within a three to four hours of Huaraz you will find the site of Chavín de Huantar, an intriguing fortress temple believed to have been built over 2,500 years ago.

The Cordillera Blanca is the foremost of the Andean mountain ranges with more than thirty 6000m peaks, with truly spectacular scenery and often compared to the mighty Himalayas. The neighbouring compact massif of the Huayhuash is even more remote and spectacular and famed for its dramatic scenery (think of the film ‘Touching the Void’).

To get here you need to grin and bear the seven to eight hour journey by road from Lima to Huaraz, but the spectacular views should make up for any discomfort.
