Luxury Holidays to Peru with Imagine Latin America.

The Inca Trail | Machu Picchu | Luxury holidays in Peru

The Inca Trail is probably one of the most famous treks in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. Due to its popularity you must book many months in advance and numbers are now restricted.

The Inca Trail, in just 26 miles (45km) manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca roads, ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just cannot be beaten: Machu Picchu.

The Classic 4-day Inca Trail trek starts at km 82 (82 kilometres along the railway from Cusco to Aguas Calientes) and takes you high up into the mountains passing the Inca ruins of Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna before finally arriving at Machu Picchu for sunrise on the fourth day of the trek.

The trek is rated ‘moderate’ and any reasonably fit person should be able to cover the route. It is fairly challenging nevertheless and altitudes of 4200m are reached, so ensuring that you are well acclimatised is important. If arriving from sea level, plan to spend at least 2 full days in Cusco prior to commencing the trek. This should allow plenty of time for acclimatisation and give you sufficient opportunity to visit the city of Cusco and nearby Inca ruins at Sacsayhuaman, Q'enko, Pucapucara and Tambomachay, as well as spending a day or two exploring the Sacred Valley visiting the tradition market town of Pisac and the fascinating Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo.

The Inca Trail can be hiked year round, excepting February when the trail is closed to allow for conservation work. January to March is the wet season so hiking then requires a good waterproof jacket and tent! The weather is drier from April to October with June, July and August marking the high season period (note that nights can also be very cold at this time). It is essential these days to book well in advance if you know you want to hike the Inca Trail. It is not something which you should leave to chance.
