Please note
Recently, following UNESCO recommendations, Peruvian authorities have placed restrictions on the visitation of Machu Picchu, the lost Incan ruins. Currently, no more than 2,500 people daily will be allowed to visit the ruins. While these new restrictions are great for the preservation of the ruins, they may cause some difficulties in your ability to visit them, so we recommend booking with plenty of notice.

Visas
UK passport holders do not require a visa to enter Peru, but your passport should have at least six months validity remaining after the date of return travel.

When to go
Peru’s climate varies widely and splits into three main regions. At the coast, summer time is typically from December to April when it is usually hot (up to c. 30 degrees C) and dry. At other times of the year (May to Oct – Nov) the southern coast line can be hidden in a fog/chilly mist called the ‘la garua’, which often does not lift during the day and which the locals amusingly liken to the 'bottom of a donkey's belly'! Otherwise it is fairly dry throughout the year on the coast.

The dry (and usually) sunny season in the mountains is from April to October/early November. The day-time temperature remains fairly even hovering around the mid to high 20s and feeling like an English summer's day, though as you are at altitude a factor sun-screen is a must, if not total block. The months of July, August and early September can feel particularly chilly at night. The dry season is undoubtedly the best time to visit if you enjoy hiking and getting out and about.

The wet season in the mountains is from the end of November to the end of March, when it can be cloudy and wet, especially in the afternoon, with temperatures similar to an English spring (18 C during the day). The rain tends to be in short, sharp bursts, rather than continual showers. Travelling to Peru at this time may mean less tourists, the possibility of better deals with flights and with rains clearing as April comes to an end the revelation of beautiful flowers in the Andes. It could be a stunning time to visit.

In the jungle the climate is generally hot and humid (about 30 C) with rainfall at any time of year, but especially between November and April. The wet season usually means a few hours of rain each day with temperatures sometimes reaching the 40s. Occasional cold fronts can lower the temperature dramatically.

Getting there
