Chiclayo, the port sitting a little further north up the coast is where you will find the royal tombs of the Moche culture and specifically the 1,700 year old tomb of the Lord of Sipan, the so-called ‘archaeological discovery of the 20th century’.
Continuing northeast to another lovely colonial town, Peruvians remember Cajamarca as the place where the Inca Empire came to an end; the Battle of Cajamarca and the capture and execution of the Incan emperor Atahualpa took place here.
From Cajamarca head high up in to the mountains around Chachapoyas to discover an even more remarkable site, the largest of which is Kuelap, an enormous citadel with 20 metre high limestone walls and dwellings decorated with carvings of wildlife and geometric patterns.
Many consider this northern area to be a destination for your second trip to Peru. However, if you have a particular interest in archaeology and you want to get off the well beaten tourist track then you should head to these northern cities now before they really become 'discovered'. Kuelap, for example, is not the easiest place to reach, but well worth the effort.
